How To Categorize Articles
GolfBizWiki uses article categories to make it as easy for users to find information. This article describes how to use the "Category" and "Tag" fields make the article's content easy to locate. What Are "Categories" and "Tags"?
GolfBizWiki uses two primary methods for categorizing articles: categories and tags:- Categories
- Categories may be viewed as rather formal independent subject-areas or topics for articles. GolfBizWiki contains categories based on theme and function. When an article is "categorized" it is linked to one or more subcategories of the theme and/or function categories. Then, when a user browses GolfBizWiki by categories, he/she will see all the articles within a category or subcategory.
- Tags
- Tags are rather informal groupings of articles. Generally, tags are used to "flag" a topic of special interest within an article. This topic may appear in articles in several different categories, so using a tag provides a complementary approach to categories for grouping similar subjects. Tags are displayed on category and sub-catgory pages below the list of articles. A user can click on a tag name to get a list of articles within the category or subcategory with that tag. Also, users can click on the Tag Cloud link in the left column to display all the tags for GolfBizWiki. Clicking one of these tags also displays the similarly tagged articles.
Steps in Categorizing Articles
Categories
- While in the text editor to enter the text of the article, click on the "Form" tab (at the top of the editor page). The organizational information about the article is displayed.
- Scroll down to the Theme field in the middle of the table.
- Click the "+" beside "Top" category. Two options will appear: function and theme.
- Click the "+" by Function. Then, click on those functions to which your article applies. Your choices will become highlighted.
- Repeat the process for theme.
- If you are finished entering the article, click the "Save" button at the bottom of the editor; otherwise click the "Save and Continue" button to continue writing/editing.
- While in the text editor to enter the text of the article, click on the "Form" tab (at the top of the editor page). The organizational information about the article is displayed.
- In the "Tag" field, either click on relevant tags in the "tag cloud" below the "Tag" field or enter new tag names directly into the field. If you are entering more than one tag, put a comma and a space after each tag, except the last one. If you are using a two word tag, connect them with the underscore (example: golf_ball).
- If you are finished entering the article, click the "Save" button at the bottom of the editor; otherwise click the "Save and Continue" button to continue working.
Tips
- It's fine to assign more than one category to an article. If fact, it's usually best to select all categories that a user might search to find the subject of an article. People tend to categorize information differently. Putting the article in multiple categories accomodates these differences.
- Look at existing tags before entering a new one to see if there is already one you can use.
- Don't enter a tag that is essentially the same as an existing category.
Warnings
- If you find an article that lacks categories or tags, please add them.
